The local structures of elementary abelian subgroups play an important role in the study of local representation of finite groups. It's fundamental in the classifications of maximal local subgroups and radical subgroups. In a joint paper with Heiko Dietrick and

Alastair Litterick we have found a way to classify all elementary abelian subgroups of finite reductive groups in non-defining charateristic. We first classify abelian subgroups in the corresponding algebraic groups and then classify these groups in finite groups using Frobenius map.
